Using a custom template?

Hi,

I am not a designer nor am I a programmer.  I have a vague understanding of html, css and so on.  I have a html template that I would like to use on a new Memberspeed site.

I understand how to upload and install the Memberspeed script to my server, set up the data base and so on.  I know that I have to ftp the template that I wish to use to the server and save it to the appropriate template directory.

My question is, how do I get the template ready to install?  It comes from a paid template reseller site.  I will change the header but that's about it.  What else do I need to be aware of in terms of coding to ensure that the template is compatible with Member Speed?  What changes/additions/deletions need to be implemented to the template prior to uploading to the server?

Thanks

Hi Wilf,

You might want to start off by modifying a ms template and see the way it structured, variables added… Upload it to your site/site design module and play around with it.

Also check out the how to tutorials.

Well ok, but I'm looking for some specific guidance.  Based on your response, do I make any and all changes to a template from the site design module (lets say I buy a template from template monster for example)?

Or do I first need to open the template in an html editor like dreamweaver to add/change code?  The templates that I have (not ms templates) come with sample text in them (latin or jibberish) to show where the body text fits on the page and so on.  How do I get rid of this sample text?

I don't mind doing the research but I need some guidance on what to research.  There should be some step by step instructions for those of us who are buying an aftermarket professional template in terms of how to work with that template.  Yes… I know I can hire a designer but this is something I would like to learn.

Cheers

Is there a template that works best with MS? Joomla, Drupal, Mambo, or HTML? Are the layouts and tags universal?
