3. Configurations-Edit Event Mailers

Saturday, July 5th, 2008

To begin setting up the MS Shopping Cart, start at System Configurations > Configure located on the lower left navigation menu

MemberSpeed Shopping Cart Configuration

Click on the link configure link, a list will of configuration options will appear start at the first button and work your way through the list, each button will open a new page with settings that need to be set, each page has how to instructions.

TIP: When setting up your shopping cart there are several pages that are great opportunities to cross sell or up dell. For example, during the configuration of you shopping cart you will need to setup the Add Thanks Message after a new Member Registers Instructions

This page is a great place to add a special promotion or complementary affiliate product at the bottom of the page.

Add Thank You Page after an Order is placed sucessfully Instructions This page is a great place to add your up sell, your visitor just became your customer, their credit card is in hand and they are in a buying mood. Why not offer them an expanded version of what they just purchased. You can also offer your up sell in the thank you email the event mailer sends out.

It is very important to remember to never modify any MS token, they look like this __NAVIGATION__ a __ on either side of a word signifies a token. These tokens found in the html code of the templates, they are needed by the software to display the items they represent. You can rearrange, reorganize them and even delete the ones you will never need, but if you modify them they will not work.

Always test any change you make before moving to the next modification, this is especially true when editing any of the preset (default) templates.

TIP: the more you edit the MS templates to make them your own, the better you will be rank in the Search Engines and less your site will look like an also ran cookie cutter site.

—-

Once you have edited the configuration settings it’s time to edit the event emailers.

Test each event email, send it to yourself, be sure it conveys the message you want sent to your customers. The Event Mailers do support html.

4a.Tax Collection and Tracking

Saturday, July 5th, 2008

Taxes – New Features – V2.03

If you need to collect sales tax and track sale taxes you have collected this module will allow you to collect (charge) multiple sales tax or VAT rate(s) depending upon your need.

New features include better interface.. You can set a flat tax or have multiple sales tax rates for States and / or Counties

Many e-Tailers by local law are required to collect sales taxes or VAT, there is an increasing trend to require all e-tailers to collect sales and VAT taxes… Local governments are loosing billions of dollars in revenue each year by not being able to collect these funds.

We are already seeing state and local governments in the United States passing tax laws that impact online marketers and require us to collect taxes if we sell in their areas.

The tool is rather straight forward to setup. click on “State” to add the tax jurisdiction(s) then go to

Tax Rates> Add New Tax Rates

On this page you add the following information

  • Tax Rate Name
  • Country
  • State
  • Tax Rate %
  • Status

The status option you select “active” or “inactive” determines whether or not the tax is going to be collected from residents of the juridiction in question.

Once you click submit the tax rates if created and added to the Tax Rates List on the previous page. This is where you can view and manage the tax rates your shopping cart is going to collect.

Shipping Module – New Features – V2.03

New Features – Fedex, USPS, UPS shipping modules

The Shipping Module is fairly self explanatory, instructions are included in each section. If your are planning on using anything other then Flat Rate shipping you will need to setup accounts with the shippers you wish to use. A link is provided to the respective shipper(s) inside of each section.

Flat Rate – is for those who offer free shipping or charge a fixed rate for shipping, stetup is straight forward.

Shipping Module> Flat Rate>Edit

On the Flat Rate management page click on the edit button, on new page will open called “modify flat rate”

If you wish to enable a flat rate charge select “true”, if you wish to disable a flat rate charge select “false” if you are enabling a flat rate charge enter the amount you wish to charge in the “flat rate shipping charge” box then click submit.

The Shipping module now includes the ability to interface in real time with Federal Express, USPS and UPS’ shipping rates databases. In order to use these services you need to register for an account with each service then you will have the necessary information required by MemberSpeed to activate this part of the shipping module. I do not need to register with all three services if you only want to use one.

Once you have registered and have a active shipping account you are ready to setup your shipping service, be sure to select “:test” mode when doing the initial setup as you need to test the system.

click on the service you wish to use and fill out the form then click submit. Now you need to test the service by creating test purchases to verify the correct shipping option(s) and shipping charges are shown and recorded.

Tip: Be sure to fill out the forms completely and throughly test each shipper setup before turning it on live. This will save hours of frustration later.

5b.Add Product To Shopping Cart- Step2

Saturday, July 5th, 2008

Add Product - As the name implies this is where you add your products. Below is a screen shot of the Add Products page it has been improved, it now has tax options and a long description editing tool.

How you fill out this page for each product determines what will be seen on your category, sub-category and individual product pages, it also determines what and how you will listed in the major search engines.

Do yourself a favor and completely fill out the form, by doing so you are taking advantage of the built in SEO capabilities of MemberSpeed.

TIP: Lately I have noticed the major search engines are in love with MemberSpeed product pages. There is a large pool of free targeted traffic looking for your products will you get you share?

Important Note: When adding a product, if you are offering free shipping for a physical product, DO NOT enter the weigh or size info into the “ADD PRODUCT”  form,  if you do your customers will see a database error during checkout.

As near as I can tell, a conflict in the configuration settings is causing the error.

The problem is this, the MS software  needs to have shipping configured to ship physical products, so the logical thing to do is to set “flat rate shipping” to $0.00.

If you set the shipping weight to anything other then “0″ the database will try to calculate a shipping charge during checkout, causing the database error.

My recommendation is to skip over (ignore) the Product Weight, Product Height and Product Width settings when offering Free Shipping for a physical product. Leave them blank by default .

Do your part when filling out your product pages, you’ll be glad you did.

Manage Products – This is where you manage your products.

Your Options are:

Active – Inactivate – All products are added “inactive” by default. To active a product simply click the check box next to a product and scroll to the bottom of the page, click the “activate” button and the product will be live on your website.

To Inactive an active product click the check box, scroll to the bottom of the page, then click the “inactivate” button. The product will be inactivated, it will not be seen on your website, it can be reactivated at any time. This differs from “delete” which removes a product permanently from the database.

Category - The category link allows you to associate your products with one or more categories, To accomplish this, click on the Category link of a product.

This is also where you manage these category associations.

Product Attributes - this is where you setup your product options i.e. color, size, etc.

To setup your product attributes go to: Shopping Cart Manager> Product Attributes>List Options Click on add option, give the option a name, click save it will show up on the list. You now need to give your option some value(s), click on the value link. Now you need to add value(s) one at a time, saving each.

Take your time, making sure each value/option is correct, this will save you loads of time later.

Now that you have created Attributes you need to associate your attributes to your products.

Go to: Shopping Cart Manager>Manage Products choose the product you wish to add attributes to by clicking on the attributes link for that product.

As you can see in the image above you need to select a Option Name, Option Value, Price Difference and Image (if applicable) for each attribute. You can create unlimited product attribute for each product pending on what option you wish to offer you customers. i.e. if your store was a clothing store you would create an attribute for each color / size combination you were offering for sale.

Some e-tailers will want to show the image of chosen attribute (i.e color options) for this you would add the appropriate image and image alt text (for SEO) for each attribute.

Setting up Product attributes is a time consuming tedious process, it may be the most difficult part of setting up the shopping cart, but it you take your time at set it up correctly the first time you will reap rewards for years to come.

TIP: I highly recommend you fully setup one or two products, to test until you have worked out the bugs in your system, before you slug through you entire product line. do this initial setup, testing and tweeking or 4 or 5 days.. under no circumstance do I recommend you do all at once. give yourself some time to mentally work through how the page pages look and feel, and tweek accordingly… You will save yourself a lot of time and re-work if you give yourself this additional time

Addition Images – For some products you may want to show additional views or close ups of features of your product, this option makes it a breeze to add these images.

Related Products – This is where you link products for cross selling. Many e-tailers sell many different but similar products. Your visitor may not be interested in the product they are looking at, but they are interested in the category, so why not show them your other products in that category. The related products tool makes setting this up a snap. Once setup your related products will be displayed below the featured products.

Think of the related products tool as a banner making tool for creating creating mini ads of related / similar products and placing them on your page with a few clicks.

In the images below you see the related products tool. To use the tool click browse categories.

A window will pop-up, it will look like the image below. Select a category from the drop down list, the available products in that category will show below, select the desired products you wish to cross sell.

Once you have made you selection, click assign, the window will close the selections will be added to the form on the previous page, to save them and make the assignment click the submit button.

Product Help Guide – Some products require additional information be made available, to help the customer make a purchasing decision. The product help guide is the tool for this. it is a full text edting tool.

To use the Product Help Guide tool click on the Product Help Guide link, a window will open showing all existing Product Help Guides for this product, to create a new one click on the “add Product Help Guide” link

A new window will open with a full text editing tool. Give this new Product Help Guide a new, then you can manually create a new Product Help Guide by typing in the text box or you can paste your previously created content. When you are satisfied with your new content, click on the submit button.

It will be added to the list of available Product Help Guides for your product. ALL Product Help Guides are inactive by default, you must activate the Product Help Guide(s) you wish to be made available for your product, inorder for them to be visable to your visitor.

Search Product – this is a search tool of MemberSpeed

Tip: I always use the advanced search feature, then I simply scroll the drop down list make my selection and click search. my search resulted is shown. This is a real time saver when I need to make minor changes to my product lisitings. it saves me having to scroll pager after page of products looking the one(s) I need to edit.

7.Shopping Cart Members/Maling List – Your Own Virtual ATM

Saturday, July 5th, 2008

Shopping Cart Members

This is where you keep track of your shopping cart members and their transactions. You can manually add members. This is also where you manage your newsletter and mass communicate with your customers via email.

You are now able to setup multiple mailing lists. And manage your shopping cart members newsletter – I like, some have found this a little confusing at first because it is not obvious how to setup mailing lists.

Using mailing lists can be a very powerful marketing method when combined with the shopping cart.

The strategy below is very powerful, because the best prospects to send our ads to are those who have already purchased from us in the past, we already of some level of credibility and trust established.

To setup a mailing list go to Search Members click on the search button the search results will show all members or select a date range to norrow the search. manually select the members you would like on your list.. Create your list Click on send to create your newsletter.

Tip: I would recommend do this every few days on a busy site and weekly of monthly on a slow site. At this time the only way to do this is to build your list manually, the time spent is time well spent. You will endup with many smail mailing lists for the same product(s). I recommend you create databases of these small lists export themto your computer and then and import them into an autoresponder. if you have more then 50 names on your mailing list this is recommended. You can use the MS built in autoresponder or any 3rd party service that allows you to import your customer lists.

Think residual income..

MemberSpeed Cart and cPanel

Tuesday, July 29th, 2008

As I write this cPanel has just released a new update, this update addresses has several security issues.

I have noticed if you have the design directory permissions set to 777 you shoping cart pages will not display correctly.  Simply change your design directory permissions to 755, this should correct the problem.

I was experiencing this issue with on of my sites, when I checked the error logs, I  found this error message:

[error] [client xx.xxx.xx.xxx] SoftException in Application.cpp:544: Directory “/home/mydomain/public_html/design/control” is writeable by group, referer: http://www.mydomain.com/control/welcome.php

After I changed the permissions on my design directory the problem was corrected…

Shopping Cart Advanced Tips

Saturday, July 12th, 2008

Now that you have your Memberspeed Shopping Cart installed and tweeked… You’re all set to start selling, but there is one nagging problem…

Your installation looks like all the other MemberSpeed Shopping Carts just with a different color scheme.

What you really want to do is take your website design to the next level.

What you really want is a unique website, one like no other.. well if that is what you want you’ve come to the right place.

As I learn more about what controls what, I’ll post  the advanced hi-lites and Tips here.

Things like, did you know the MS Shopping cart appearance is controlled by it’s own styles sheet file.  By editing this css file you can hide text and eliminate design elements that are hard coded into the software.

I’m not sure what form this section is going to take on as time goes on.. we’ll just have to see, if you have discovered a “trick” please share it…

Before you do anything… grab a pen and note pad to document the changes you are making, this is really important, because every time you update or upgrade Memberspeed your edited page are at risk of being over written, we have no way of knowing what code has been chaned or improved.

Without accurate  documentation you have no easy way to restore any changes that are over written. or to even know what you changed.

DO NOT depend on your memory, it will play tricks on you.. You most likely will not be able to remember what was changed and how it was done. Especially if you have more then one website and any sort of a life out side of the internet…
